Technician: Amplified

February 19, 2018

PSA TEC AMPLIFIED BLOG SERIES | TECHNICIAN

The theme of TEC 2018 is “Amplified.” We gave this phrase to several people who are involved in TEC in a variety of ways – from PSA employees to TEC attendees, speakers and exhibitors. They were asked to share what the phrase means to them and how the theme ties into TEC 2018.

As a 17-year veteran of the Low Voltage industry, I am always amazed at how fast our industry changes. In the beginning, I was working on Type 1 cable and installing Cat 3. We are into enhanced Cat 6 cables. I have installed analog cameras that were far from HD quality, and they were cutting edge at the time now we provide amazing high def images and huge recording features through IP based cameras systems.

We are seeing an increase in manufacturers who will not talk to techs without a tech ID number or a factory certification.

So how do we keep up? What resources are available? How do I find time to read, research and/or learn about these advances in technology? Great questions. I have found that during installation of new equipment I am always learning. I share and talk to co-workers almost daily, and we share information and as a license holder in my state I am required to take continuing education. Most of you who do what I do probably have the same experiences.

Additionally, I have been in conversation with my office for the last couple of years to get factory training. We are seeing an increase in manufacturers who will not talk to techs without a tech ID number or a factory certification. Last year I was selected to attend Lenel core training at PSA TEC in the Denver area. I had heard many things about PSA TEC and was excited to attend. The course was great, I was able to learn a great deal from Lenel factory instructors. There were also trade and vendor displays and information to gain additional knowledge from.

The experience at PSA TEC last year “amplified’ my knowledge, gave me the ability to interact with my peers from around the country and receive a factory certification that will make me a better tech, a more valuable employee and the ability to give our customers top tier installs and service.
